Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty is a commonly performed aesthetic surgery both in our country and worldwide. It involves reshaping the nasal tip and bridge as well as correcting the position of the internal cartilage and bone structures to restore normal anatomical alignment.
This surgery was performed for cosmetic and functional reasons. Difficulty breathing is often the primary concern that patients face, while aesthetic needs are typically secondary. However, features such as a drooping nasal tip or a deviated nasal bridge are among the main cosmetic reasons for surgery. The nose, situated at the center of the face, is one of the most defining features of a person’s appearance. Postoperatively, patients often experience noticeable transformations in their facial features. Rhinoplasty is one of the most frequently performed surgical procedures in Brazil.

Pre-operative Requirements
- A thorough physical examination and clear understanding of the patient's expectations are crucial before surgery. Based on detailed evaluations and imaging results, the surgery date was determined.
- Smoking was stopped at least one month prior to the operation.
- Blood-thinning medications, such as aspirin, should be discontinued at least three weeks in advance.
Post-operative Recovery
- Patients were encouraged to walk around as early as the 4th hour after surgery. Intensive cold compression is recommended on the first day. Swelling and bruising tended to peak around the 2nd or 3rd day but began to subside afterward.
- The patients were discharged on day 1 after being instructed on wound care and dressing routines.
- The nasal tampons were removed on day 3.
- Stitches at the nasal tip were removed during the first week along with the external splint.
- After removing the external splint, the nose was re-taped to reduce swelling and remains taped for two weeks.
- Patients were taught a massage routine to be performed regularly for 1–3 months

Nasal cartilage and bones form the framework of the nose. Excessive curvature or deviation of these structures can affect surgical outcomes. Cartilage, in particular, has a type of "memory" — meaning that even if it's straightened during surgery, it may slowly return to its original shape over time.
Another factor is the patient’s skin type. In patients with thick skin, surgical modifications may be less noticeable, and excessive fibrotic tissue may form during the healing process, which can negatively affect the results. In such cases, patients may be referred to dermatology specialists to thin their skin before surgery.
The nasal anatomy in each patient was unique. Although the surgical techniques are similar, the results vary significantly. Recovery depends on many factors, including:

• Medications used
• Environmental influences
• Skin characteristics
Owing to these variables, rhinoplasty is considered one of the most unpredictable surgeries in cosmetic medicine.
Rhinoplasty can be performed using either an open or closed approach. The main difference is that open rhinoplasty involves a small incision in the nasal tip. The choice of method was made jointly by the patient and the surgeon.
Once the cartilage and bone are exposed, the necessary adjustments are made. The nasal tip was reshaped, tampons were placed inside the nose, and a splint was applied externally to complete the surgery.
Surgery typically lasts between 2 and 4 h.
Contrary to popular beliefs, rhinoplasty is not a painful procedure.
Once the splint was removed, the swelling gradually decreased daily. The nose begins to take shape between months 3 and 6, and the final result is typically achieved after one year.
No surgery could be considered 100% permanent. Over time, the nasal tip may experience slight sagging. To compensate for this, the surgeon usually designs the tip to be 10°–15 °more elevated than normal. The outcome depends largely on the healing process of the patient. It is important to consider that revision surgery may be necessary in the future.
