Fat Injection(lipofilling)

Fat injection

Fat injection is the process of harvesting fat from the patient, processing it through specific procedures, and reinjecting it into the patient. It both fills the area with volume deficiency and promotes tissue regeneration through the stem cell effect, resulting in a more vibrant structure.

Fat is harvested from predetermined areas of the body using blunt-tipped thin cannulas, then processed into nano or micro form. It is then injected into the desired region.

Who Are the Ideal Candidates for Fat Grafting?

Fat grafting is suitable for patients with volume loss in areas such as the under-eyes, periorbital region, midface, and lower face—especially those with thin skin and dissatisfaction with their skin quality. However, in patients with significant skin sagging, fat grafting alone may not be sufficient. In such cases, it is often combined with facelift or neck lift procedures.

Fat grafting not only restores volume in areas with deficiency but also promotes regeneration thanks to the stem cell effect of the transferred fat.

Fat grafting is more effective in areas with minimal movement and muscle activity but good blood supply, such as the cheeks, midface, under-eye area, chin, and jawline. It is generally not recommended for midline structures like the nose and lips.

In suitable patients, fat injection can be performed under local anesthesia. However, it is generally preferred to perform the procedure under sedation. If fat injection is combined with other operations, general anesthesia is usually preferred.

Fats are typically harvested from the lower and upper abdomen, inner thighs, or waist area.

Approximately 20-30% of the injected fats will dissolve within the first 3 weeks, and 30-50% will dissolve over time. Therefore, more fat is injected than needed initially. It was previously thought that all of the fats would dissolve, but recent studies have shown that a significant portion remains. To increase permanence, fat injection should be performed in 2-3 sessions.

Not smoking after the operation, avoiding intense physical activity for the first 2 months, and minimizing excessive massage can enhance the permanence of the results.

Contrary to what is believed, fat injection is not a painful procedure. Bruising and swelling are common, but the process itself is generally not painful.

Although injections are made to ensure symmetry, the absorption of the fat may happen asymmetrically, which can lead to minimal asymmetry. However, this is usually not significant and can be corrected with touch-up sessions if necessary.

As with all surgical procedures, the recovery process in fat injection surgery is both surgery and patient-dependent. For general procedures and possible complications, please read our consent form.
